Cataract

Cataract is common in people as they age due to changes in the lens proteins. Prolonged use of eye drops and inhalers can also increase the risk of cataract formation. To assess the condition’s impact, you will be required to perform a Visual Acuity Test. Our eye surgeon will examine and check for cornea, iris, and lens abnormalities. Cataract surgery may be advised depending on the severity of the condition and its influence on your daily activities.

Common cataract symptoms include blurry vision, seeing colors in a faded form, halos around light, night vision issues, frequent prescription changes, and double vision. The cloudiness of the eye occurs eventually and can interfere with your vision. The protein clumps can prevent the lens from sending clear images to the retina.

Cataracts can be categorized into several types depending on where it forms in the eye.

Nuclear cataracts

The nucleus or the center of the eye is affected here, which usually occurs with aging. Initially, you may experience your reading vision getting better; however, it doesn’t last long. Over time, the hardening of the lens will form into yellow or brown color, hindering your vision.

Cortical cataracts

These cataracts form in the edge of your lens, referred to as the cortex. The formation may look like triangles that point toward the center of your eyes. The vision may go hazy in this situation.

Posterior capsular cataracts

The lens’s back effects tend to form faster than the other types. They usually affect your near vision and make it challenging to work in brighter light. Signs and symptoms can often be seen within the first few months.

Congenital cataracts

These are the types of cataracts that can be seen in infants. The formation can be linked to genetics, or other illnesses like rubella, during pregnancy. These are usually removed through surgery. However, a surgical procedure is not required if the spot is available outside the eye.

Cataract surgery involves taking out the cloudy lens and replacing it with an artificial one. However, there are instances the artificial replacement is not required, and only a cataract will be removed. The right process for you will be suggested after a comprehensive eye exam at the Spanish Eye Clinic.

Phacoemulsification

Here, a small incision will be made, and a small device will be used to break the cloudy lens using UV radiation. The broken pieces will be suctioned out before replacing the artificial lens.

Extracapsular cataract extraction

Here, the clouded lenses will be taken out in one piece making a larger incision in your eye. The surgery is usually performed on those with immense cataracts and significant vision issues.

Femtosecond laser surgery

A laser will be used here to break the lens and involve the replacement. The process can simultaneously involve correcting astigmatism and reshaping your cornea for a clear vision.

Types of Replacement Lenses in Cataract Surgeries

Intraocular lenses are involved in lens replacement. They are made of clear plastic and come in several types where you can make the selection depending on your eye condition and other related factors. You can discuss with our eye surgeons before selecting the most suitable lens type for your surgery. The lens types are.

Monofocal IOL

This is the most common type of lens and can stretch or bend to help your eye focus. The implant can stay focused at one fixed distance. Distant vision can be seen clearly with these. However, you may need glasses for near or close-up vision.

Multifocal IOL

Similar to a progressive lens, multifocal IOLs benefit you in seeing both distant and near objects. Your brain may take several months to adjust with the lens and your vision to become natural. Halos and glare around lights can be often seen in this type of lens than a mono-focal lens.

Accommodating IOL

This is a flexible option that gives features similar to natural eye movement and conditions. Those who wear these IOLs may be less likely to require glasses to read or see close-up objects.

Toric IOL

The lens is often recommended for those with severe astigmatism conditions where the eye’s cornea is more circular looking than its natural way. This intraocular lens will help lower the situation and the need for glasses after surgery.
